Week 2: Background Research

Statement of Chosen TFI: Space Elevator

I decided to choose space elevators as the topic of my graphic design paper because they allowed me to realize my dream of exploring the universe. Space elevators can transport people and goods from Earth to space efficiently and cheaply. The space elevator is an intriguing concept I'm eager to investigate further in my research.

Sources From Reading:

  1. Why go to space?: This article is from Utah State University. Cohen is the author of this article, and he explains why he believes in human space exploration and interstellar colonization. He discussed several advantages of space exploration. The benefits include scientific discovery, technological progress, economic growth, and the potential to improve human resilience and reduce the risk of extinction.

  2. Energy and Cost Efficiency: In this article, the author described that The elevator is also more energy efficient than using rockets to launch into space because it will use Earth’s rotational momentum to propel itself into space. This would allow the elevator to run on an infinite energy source, rendering rocket fuel obsolete. In fact, conventional rocket fuel would only be used for station maintenance and upkeep.

Sources From Watching:

  1. Space Elevator – Science Fiction or the Future of Mankind?: Philipp Dettmer founded Kurzgesagt, an animation and design studio based in Germany. In the video “The Space Elevator - Science Fiction or the Future of Mankind?” The author Kurzgesagt, explores the concept of a space elevator, including the benefits and challenges of building one.

  2. Energy and Cost Efficiency: This video introduces the concept of a space elevator, the physics behind it, and the potential benefits and challenges of its development. The video includes expert interviews, animations, and graphics to help illustrate the concepts being discussed.
